Providing access to healthcare in Miami-Dade, USA

Context

The 2022 Community Health Assessment for Miami-Dade County, prepared by the Florida Department of Health, has highlighted a critical issue in Miami-Dade County: the significant challenge in accessing healthcare. This challenge is multifaceted, encompassing difficulties in securing appointments with healthcare providers, the high costs associated with medical care, and transportation barriers.

These issues are particularly acute in Miami-Dade County, where approximately 30 percent of the population aged 19–64 is uninsured, significantly higher than the national average.

Addressing this gap through the provision of free health services and emergency healthcare is not only a moral imperative but also beneficial for the community at large, improving public health, reducing healthcare costs, addressing health disparities and fostering community trust and engagement.

Goals

Expand and provide access to healthcare and emergency services for the disadvantaged and uninsured population of Miami-Dade County.

Activities

• Provide emergency services, outpatient and inpatient health services to uninsured individuals.

Myriad Canada is working with the Mount Sinai Medical Center Foundation on this project, a US nonprofit which provides resources to further the mission of the medical center – to provide high quality health care to their diverse community enhanced through teaching, research, charity care and financial responsibility.

Myriad Canada’s role is to carry out charitable projects across the globe in accordance with its charitable purposes. We control and monitor the use of funds and the progress of charitable activities to ensure that donations made to Myriad Canada have the greatest impact in accordance with donors’ expressed wishes.
