Support this project

Myriad Canada is working with Children of Zimbabwe Society, a Finnish voluntary charitable organization that implements an education and wellbeing support program for about 400 orphans and vulnerable children in Dzivarasekwa, a poor suburb of Harare in Zimbabwe. The local implementing organization is Dzikwa Trust Fund.

Context

Families in Dzivarasekwa earn about $3 USD per day and cannot send all the children in their care to school. Children attend normal government and municipal schools, but even basic education is not free in Zimbabwe. Guardians must pay compulsory school fees, levies, exam fees, school uniforms, winter jerseys, sportswear, stationery etc. Without a scholarship to pay all these expenses, children will spend their days in the streets. The scholarship fee covers not only all the education related school expenses, but also contributes towards a daily hot meal, remedial lessons, ICT training, health care, performing arts training (choir, dance, music, theatre), ballgames, sports, and special activities for empowerment.

Ways to support this project are:

  • Making a donation in any amount to help support a senior student to go to university and/or purchase text books
  • Becoming a sponsor for a younger child. Donors interested in sponsoring a young child should contact Caroline Chaulet for more details: caroline@myriadcanada.org.

We highly recommend donors to support children until the end of their studies (at least until they graduate high school).

Annual Sponsorship Fees

  • Primary School (ages 6-12)                                         420 EUR              (approximately 680 CAD)
  • Junior High School (ages 13-17 years)                     540 EUR              (approximately 875 CAD)
  • Senior High School (ages 17-19 years)                     720 EUR              (approximately 1155 CAD)

Annual costs in Higher Education range 2,800 – 3,600 EUR           (approximately 4,300 – 5,600 CAD)

Goals

  • To increase the number of students that can attend college, polytechnic or university, thus contributing to their future employability.
  • To provide textbooks for senior level (A-level) students so they do not have to share textbooks with several other students and can take textbooks home with them for study.
  • To increase the number of young children with a sponsor.

Activities

Activities may include:

  • To provide funding for students who have secured a study place in a college or university program but have no source of funding to enable them to further their education and afterwards obtain gainful employment.
  • Purchasing textbooks for senior level students.

Key Performance Indicators to be reached (KPIs)

  • To reduce financial constraints for children at Primary school or Junior (O-level) or Senior (A-level) Secondary school level.
  • To reduce barriers for efficient studying by enhancing critical resources for efficient studies by Form 5 & Form 6 students.
  • To promote equal opportunities by providing higher education support for the most vulnerable groups in a poor township of Dzivarasekwa, such as girls and young women.
  • Promoting and funding study pathways in fields where Zimbabwe is experiencing a severe skills gap, thus leading to more secure future employability by talented vulnerable youth.
  • Raising awareness amongst youth in Dzivarasekwa of the culture of merit through dedication, setting realistic goals, attention to work and achieving results.
