Context
- Everywhere on our planet, birds are in a state of high alert. The situation of birds in Quebec requires research and conservation activities in order to reduce this level. In order to be effective, conservation efforts must be based on sound scientific knowledge.
- Public involvement in science is now recognized as being an indispensable means of contributing to scientific research and the protection of biodiversity. Acquiring knowledge about the situation of living species (e.g. Birds, butterflies and fungi) has made great advances today, thanks to the masses of data collected by the general public. In order that such data have scientific value, there is a need for protocols to be developed, implemented and monitored. The data collected must be analysed and the results published so that appropriate measures can be put in place for the conservation of the species and to enable those involved to take well-informed decisions.
Goals
- To develop, implement and improve citizen science programmes that involve the birdwatching community and the general public in projects to acquire knowledge about the birds of Quebec.
- To compile and analyse data relating to birds and their habitat that are generally obtained as part of citizen science projects.
- To publish the results among the scientific community and the general public.
Activities
- To compile data as part of a citizen science programme: information regarding the distribution, abundance and trends in bird populations.
- To work in partnership with various biology departments in university networks, with relevant ministries and various non-governmental organisations that share the same interests regarding conservation of avian diversity in Quebec.
- To agree research protocols and platforms for data input and ensure that the data collected will have scientific value.
- To instigate training and development programmes in function of new information.
- To disseminate information through scientific articles and technical reports, as well as through the publication of documents and articles aimed at informing and engaging the general public.
Key Performance Indicators to be Reached (KPIs)
- The compilation of data through a scientific approach;
- The dissemination of scientific articles and technical reports targeting the scientific community and specialised organisations;
- Publication of documents and articles aimed at the general public.
