Context
At the very beginning of the war, the ‘Bus for Peace’ initiative was created. It was one of the first humanitarian missions to step inside Ukraine in March 2022, and transported over 500 women and children from the front-lines to the Polish border. The ‘Bus for Peace’ initiative also supported the Red Cross and the French Humanitarian Fire Brigade to deliver vital supplies to Ukrainian citizens before they secured entry to the country.
As the war in Ukraine enters its second year, countless people find themselves facing great hardships. The ongoing lack of services and provisions is often worsened by people’s inability to access any available services due to a shortage of transportation and reliable vehicles. This project will help those on front line and the general population in 11 districts across 6 regions receive and have access to these basic services and provisions.
Goals
The goal of this project is to provide and maintain humanitarian transport vehicles to facilitate access to humanitarian and basic services.
Activities
The vehicles will be part of a ‘network’, operated primarily by Ukrainian volunteers and supported by First Hands Ukraine and SAVE UA.
- Activities will include:
- Transportation and relocation of refugees and displaced civilians;
- Transportation of medical supplies;
- Transportation of sick, vulnerable and injured civilians to medical facilities;
- Transportation of generators;
- Transportation of drinking water and water purification means;
- Distribution of warm clothes, blankets and portable shelters;
- Distribution of food.
Myriad Canada is working with SAVE UA on this project, a non-profit organization in the Ukraine working to create a more stable national food security system. Some 80% of SAVE UA’s employees are internally displaced persons.
